The Trinidad and Tobago cricket team will receive $4.88 million to assist in their participation in the 2011 Champions League Twenty20 cricket tournament in India from September 23 to October 9.
Minister of Sport Anil Roberts made the announcement Thursday. He said government will fully support the team's preparations and stay in India.
Roberts admitted that it’s a lot of money. However he said it is all part of the diversification that will see sport tourism as a major thrust of People’s Partnership Government.
“We must market Trinidad and Tobago in the best way through our brilliant sportsmen for their team work and camaraderie”.
Roberts said team captain Darren Ganga will wear two hats during the tournament - his captain's and that of T&T's sport ambassador. He said Ganga is expected to make contact with different IPL franchises to play in competitions and also to encourage them to attend training sessions in Trinidad and Tobago.
The minister said officials will meet Friday with Ganga, Dinanath Ramnarine and a member of the Trinidad and Tobago Cricket Board to discuss the expenditure and to ensure there is transparency.
