Equality Council wants Hinds prosecuted for breach of Integrity Law

The Equality Council of Trinidad &Tobago has written to the Integrity Commission calling for criminal prosecution of Opposition senator Fitzgerald Hinds.

A statement from the council's chairman, Kristal Ramroopsingh, points out that Hinds breached Section 38 (2) of the Integrity in Public Life Act when he made damning statements against Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar concerning the award of a $40 million contract by the National Petroleum and Marketing Co.

The letter stated: “It is in the opinion of the Equality Council that Senator Hinds is in breach of the Act pursuant to the Integrity in Public Life Act, Section 38 (2)–Any person who knowingly and mischievously makes or causes to be made a false report to the commission or misleads the commission by giving false information or by making false statements or accusations shall be guilty of an offence and liable on conviction to a fine of $250,000 and a term of imprisonment not exceeding five years.”

The council noted that it no contract was awarded to supply and maintain tractors for gasoline haulage. Therefore, the complaint by Hinds was mischievous and intended to bring Persad-Bissessar into disrepute and public odium.

“In the circumstances, I ask that this matter be thoroughly investigated as a matter of urgency with a view to criminal prosecution against the wrongdoer,” said Ramroopsingh.
