Witness says she felt betrayed by HCU boss

A former secretary at the Hindu Credit Union (HCU) testified Tuesday that she felt betrayed by her boss, HCU PResident Harry Harnarine.

Sunita Ragoonanan told the enquiry in the HCU and CLICO she was frustrated with the procedures in place at the HCU.

Ragoonanan told the commission in 2007 she agreed to sell Harnarine an acre of land given that her father, Roopnarine Ragoonanan, had given to her. In return, she said, HCU would give her a house in the HCU-owned residential area known as Pine Development, and the difference would be paid in cash.

She said she was unhappy with the house and decided to take cash for the property, which she said Harnarine had transferred to his wife and children.

She claimed that over a one-year period she sent at least 10 hand-written notes to Harnarine requesting the outstanding money. After a long wait HCU deposited the money into an account in her name but she was unable to access the funds.

Ragoonanan said the same problems about getting access to funds existed with respect to her salary and the salaries of other employees. She said they money was paid in HCU accounts but workers were unable to get the money.

"There were some problems that we started to experience in 2007 to get monies out of our accounts.

"We were told that they were unable to get salaries. We were told that we were unable to get full salaries and we could only get part of our salaries," Ragoonanan said.

Ragoonanan said the HCU put a withdrawal ceiling of $1,000 on the salaries and at times employees could only get $200 for the entire month.

Another witness, Sonny Ragbir, said he encouraged over 100 people to join the credit union and was now "embarrassed and ashamed".

And a third witness said the collapse of the HCU robbed his daughters of an opportunity for higher education because the money set aside for their education is still tied up in the HCU.
