Works Minister Jack Warner on Monday launched a million dollar project to dredge the Dry River in Port of Spain, giving the assurance that when the three-week operation is over flooding would no longer be a problem.
The ministry has rented an amphibious excavator for the project, which involves moving silt and debris that has been accumulating for years.
Warner told reporters two excavators would be involved in clearing waterways. He said one is at work at the Dry River and a second will be deployed in South Trinidad to clear the river in Woodland.
The minister said the last time the Dry River was dredged was in 2007 and it was de-silted in 2009.
"I was told that there's a lot of silt at the bottom and this causes the water to go back into the city and causes a lot of flooding," Warner said. He said this is only one part of the work underway. He noted that the ministry is also clearing other waterways and drains in the city.
