Imbert says AG planning to sue him for purchase of M.V. Sue

Former Works and Transport Minister Colm Imbert told reporters Friday the Government of Trinidad and Tobago (GORTT) is planning to sue him to recover $50 million for the purchase of the MV Sue, a vessel that was bought for the Water Taxi service.

The vessel had serious mechanical defects and had never been used in the service.

Imbert spoke about the matter at a new conference. He told reporters he has received a pre-action protocol letter regarding the expenditure on the vessel.

The former minister said Attorney General Anand Ramlogan must make a clear statement on whether the Government is going to take him to court for the decision to buy the vessel.

He also stated that he will write Commissioner of Police Dwayne Gibbs and the Integrity Commission about the matter.

Imbert stated that he the claim against him is that he bought the vessel knowing it was not up to the required standard. However, he denied that he was responsible for that.

He said he agreed to buy the MV Sue on the recommendation of the then Minister in the Ministry of Works and Transport, Roger Joseph.

He said it would be a very dangerous thing for T&T to resort to this kind of action on the part of the Government. He said the allegations were not criminal in nature.

He added: “When I look at these documents there are no allegations of corruption. There is no allegation that any money was stolen. There is no allegation of fraud, no allegation of bribery. There is no allegation of impropriety or corruption whatsoever.”

He said it was a civil suit to recover the cost of the ferry, based on a view that it was wrong on the part of a former minister to have purchased the vessel.

Imbert called the whole matter "a wild-goose chase" and a “horrible conspiracy.” And he stated that he plans to initiate criminal proceedings against the State for taking civil action based on documents knowing that they were false.

Joseph now holds a key position at the National Infrastructure Development Company (Nidco).

Last month the Attorney General said $30 million had “disappeared into nowhere” when he announced his intention to take legal action against all but one member of the former eTecK board to recover money.

At the same time he announced that several projects undertaken by the former PNM government are under review, including:
• Brian Lara Stadium
• purchase of the fast ferry, the MV Sue, which he said might lead to a case of negligence
• Scarborough hospital, which he said should result in a civil fraud action against those responsible for the “wanton waste and corruption” that led to the inordinate delay in the project
• T&TEC
• Petrotrin
• UTT
