Former San Fernando Mayor to head PLIPDECO board

The government of Trinidad and Tobago has appointed former San Fernando mayor Ian Atherly as chairman of the board of directors of the Point Lisas Industrial Port Development Corporation Ltd (Plipdeco).

He replaces Brigadier Carl Alfonso, who resigned as Plipdeco chairman effective May 31.

Media reports say Alfonso will be taking up a position as head of the Prime Minister's household staff, at the Diplomatic Centre.

Atherly is a former member of the opposition People's National Movement (PNM). He fell out with his political leader, Patrick Manning and later declared his support for the People's Partnership, opening campaigning for them in the 2010 local government election.

He told the Express newspaper, "I always say that I'm a patriot and when I'm called upon to serve, I do it to the best of my ability."
