The Minister for Tobago Development said Thursday she and the Supermarket Association of Trinidad and Tobago are working on proposals to bring down the cost of groceries in Tobago.
Vernella Alleyne-Toppin said she has had several meetings with the association to find a forumla for reducing the cost of food in the island.
She said the point of the meetings has been to make sure it's a win-win situation where prices will go down in Tobago without businesses incurring any significant loses that would negatively impact their operations.
She said there is an unacceptable difference in the cost of living between Tobago and Trinidad adding that her discussions are focused on getting equity in the price of food in Tobago as it relates to prices in Trinidad.
“One of the things we decided to do was to host members of the Supermarket Association of Trinidad and Tobago in a meeting in Tobago with supermarket owners and operators from Tobago,” Minister Alleyne-Toppin said.
The Chief Executive Officer of Penny Savers Limited, Lloyd Warner, would be assisting in facilitating stakeholders from the Tobago supermarket sector who would be interested in attending the meeting.
