Keith Rowley is not happy with a statement by Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs that he is not investigating corruption allegations against Jack Warner and is giving Gibbs five days to change his mind.
The opposition leader told reporters Thursday if Gibbs fails to act within that time frame he would report Gibbs to the the Police Service Commission (PSC).
“I’m giving him five days to reverse his position or we will report him to the PSC. The CoP has to report to somebody. If the executive is not prepared to protect the State, the Opposition is not without options,” Rowley stated.
Gibbs said earlier this week that police would not investigate bribery allegations against Warner until they received relevant information. Gibbs made the announcement in the presence of the head of the PSC, Ramesh Deosaran.
Rowley said the commissioner's position is "irresponsible" and tantamount to dereliction of duty. He went as far as suggesting that there might be a case for the dismissal of Gibbs. “A Commissioner of Police has no duty to protect anybody’s political ascendancy or demise,” Rowley declared.
He said he is not seeking to get anyone prosecuted, but merely asking the police chief to act according to the law. “This is not a Jack Warner thing. He just happens to be the person involved,” he said.
PNM Senator Fitzgerald Hinds wrote Gibbs on June 6 asking him if he had started or intend to start investigations into the allegations against Warner relating to a possible breach of laws, including the Exchange and Control Act, the Customs Act.
