Lowest murder toll in T&T in four years

Trinidad and Tobago recorded 166 murders by the end of the first week of June, according to a tally reported in the Trinidad Express.

That's the lowest figure in four years and 59 murders less that the comparable period last year, when the toll was 225.

According to the Express recorded numbers of murders for other years were:

  • 2009 - 232
  • 2008 - 211
  • 2007 - 123
The government has praised Police Commissioner Dwayne Gibbs for his role in managing the country's murder toll although Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has stated that one murder is too many.

Minister in the ministry of national security Subhas Panday told Parliament recently the reduction in serious crimes is due to "innovative methods" that Gibbs has implemented since taking office.

Attorney General Anand Ramlogan has also thanked Gibbs and his team.
