The chairman of the United National Congress, Jack Warner, on Friday issued a statement on the death of former PNM cabinet minister Ken Valley, calling the news of valley's death "a shock to the national community in spite of knowing of his extended fight against cancer."
Warner said, "Mr. Valley had devoted his life to the development of this country and his loss robs us of the wisdom he acquired over the years which would have augured well for all of us as we seek to make Trinidad and Tobago a better place.
"His life was a true example of one who in spite of ascending to the lofty heights of political excellence never lost the common touch and with humility and civility lived a life of service for the people he loved.
"His passing is a solemn reminder of the frailty of humanity and should teach us to order our lives in the way that Ken did with dignity and love for all mankind.
"Certainly, those of us who witnessed his eloquence in the hallowed chamber of Parliament will never forget the quality of his content nor the cognition in his every contribution and it is in those moments the true measure of the man became known.
"But his finely tuned sense of humour, his raucous laughter; his strength in his beliefs and his virtual invincibility on the table tennis board are also vivid reminders of the strength of Ken Valley and the “realness” of the man who walked among kings, princes and commoners who was respected by all and loved by many.
"We will miss Ken but the life he lived and the legacy he has left as a businessman, as a politician, as a gentleman, will never be forgotten.
"Trinidad and Tobago is a wealthier place today because of Ken Valley and though we mourn we are cognizant of the fact that the grave holds no victory over Ken who even in death has destroyed the sting of death. His memory will always live on.
"On behalf of the family of the United National Congress I want to express our deepest condolences on the passing of this true son of the soil. His strength and power will always be remembered and in our hearts we know that Trinidad and Tobago was blessed to have an amazing person like Kenneth Valley.
"Rest in peace my friend."
