An American federal jury on Thursday found Trinidadian Kareem Ibrahim, 65, guilty of taking part in a failed plot to blow up jet fuel tanks at John F Kennedy International Airport in New York.
A fourth man, Abdel Nur, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 15 years.
The jury returned guilty verdicts on five conspiracy counts after deliberating for two days. Ibrahim could get life in prison at his sentencing, which is scheduled for October 21.
Guyanese Russell Defreitas, a former cargo handler, was the mastermind of the plot. He and co-conspirator Abdul Kadir, an engineer and former member of Guyana’s parliament, are serving life in prison for their part in the plot.
A fourth man, Abdel Nur, pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 15 years.
Ibrahim’s case was heard separately because he became ill.
Federal prosecutors said the men wanted to kill thousands of people and cripple the American economy by blowing up the fuel tanks and the underground pipelines that run through an adjacent Queens neighbourhood.
