Tax amnesty extended to June 30

Finance Minister Winston Dookeran on Tuesday allowed taxpayers an extension of one month to pay outstanding taxes without penalties.

Last year Dookeran announced a tax amnesty to try to get citizens and businesses to pay back taxes amounting to more than $13 billion. That deadline was due to expire at midnight Tuesday.

However the minister agred to extend the time to June 30.

The amnesty took effect on September 8, 2010 for penalties and interest on outstanding taxes for the years of income up to 2009.
