High praise for police chief from AG Ramlogan

Attorney General Anand Ramlogan on Tuesday commended Commissioner of Police Dwayne Gibbs and his officers for their work in significantly reducing crime.

Ramlogan was speaking in the Senate on the Anti-Gang Bill, 2010, which the upper House passed unanimously.

"We must give Jack his jacket," The AG said. "And I wish to compliment and say congratulations to the Police Service and our Commissioner of Police for this drop in the homicide rate. Hats off to you, Commissioner Gibbs, your Deputy Commissioners, Mr Ewatski and Mr Williams, and of course, outgoing, Mr Raymond Craig, and incoming, confirmed."

Ramlogan said Government is committed to a further reduction in crime.

Minister in the Ministry of National Security, Senator Subhas Panday, said crime statistics for the period January to May 2011 show a decline in homicides.

"For the corresponding period January to May 2010, there were 167 murders, and for this year, it is 30 less," Panday said. "We are not happy with that. One death is too many," he added.

Panday said Government has done all in its power to reduce crime including the 'locking down' of certain areas.
