T&T Parliament unanimously passes finance intelligence bill

The government and the opposition in Trinidad and Tobago came together Monday to amend and pass the Financial Intelligence Bill, which had originally caused heated debate.

When it was put to a vote in the House of Representative the bill got unanimously approval. The act deals with the implementation of a stringent money-laundering policy.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar had appealed for MPs to pass the bill saying that Trinidad and Tobago faced the risk of being blacklisted because of the non-implementation of the FIU Act.

The collaboration on the bill came as a result of the work of Attorney General Anand Ramlogan, the Commonwealth Parliamentary Counsel, Opposition Chief Whip Marlene McDonald, Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley and Diego Martin North/East MP Colm Imbert ,"who worked assiduously to achieve a measure of consensus", the Prime Minister said.

She expressed gratitude on behalf of the government.
Imbert said it was a "pleasure" communicating with the Attorney General "in view of the very accommodating nature of the discussions".
