HDC renovating Diego houses for middle income professionals: John

The head of the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) said Monday the corporation is reconfiguring hundreds of housing units at Victoria Keyes, Diego Martin to make them more comfortable for young professionals, including police, nurses, teachers, journalists and others.

Jearlean John made the statement in an interview with the Trinidad Guardian in response to allegations by Opposition Leader Dr Keith Rowley who told reporters Monday that the HDC is changing the units for “investors”.

He charged that the people on the HDC database will not get the homes. Speaking at a newsconference at his office Monday, Rowley produced pictures of the project showing upgrades.

The former Manning PNM administration built the houses for low-income earners, Rowley noted, adding that the new HDC plan would deny those people access to the homes.

John said that's not true. She told the Guardian the HDC decided to renovate the homes following complaints from tenants that the HDC units were too small.

She said the HDC is converting the three-bedroom units were into two-bedroom homes to make those living in them more comfortable. John noted that the HDC is expanding the units from about 900 square feet to between 1,100 and 1,200 square feet for middle-income earners.

She pointed out that the PNM administration did the same thing at the Fidelis Heights, St Augustine housing project.
