Message from Winston Dookeran, leader of the Congress of the People (COP):
The Congress of the People extends sincere greetings to the citizens of our beloved nation as we celebrate this blessed occasion of Easter 2011.
Lent, which is a period of restraint, prepares us to appreciate the feast of Easter. In our Christian religion, not uniquely, we celebrate sacrifice.
As a human being, Jesus suffered from injustice, betrayal, the depravation of his compatriots, and, ultimately torture and death. In his divine resurrection, we experience the surge of victory over evil and absolve from our own human failings.
This Easter time let us jubilate, let us celebrate new beginnings and the good we have in one another.
As we approach our 50th Anniversary of Independence (1962-2012), there are many important lessons to be learned from this celebration which are relevant to us today as our country like the rest of the world faces challenging times, namely, economic hardships, social upheavals and natural disasters.
Undoubtedly, these enduring lessons we can keep close to our hearts as true patriots of Trinidad and Tobago.
May I take this opportunity, therefore, to wish all fellow citizens, especially those of the Christian community, a Happy, Holy and Safe Easter.
