Jack inaugurates new ILS at Crown Point Airport

Jack Warner on Tuesday formally inaugurated the new Instrument Landing System (ILS) at the Crown Point Airport in Tobago. The Airports Authority invested $22 million in the project, which greatly enhances safety at the airport.

The ILS system provides pilots with precise guidance for the final landing approach. allowing aircraft to land at the designated touchdown point.

Warner said it's a significant step toward modernizing aviation systems, especially as pilots have told him of the risk they face when using the non-directional beacon system.

The Works and Transport minister expressed satisfaction that the project is finally completed and said the days of inefficiencies in aviation and industry safety in the country are gone forever.

"We have the will to bring aviation safety to Tobago. We have the will not to discriminate and spend $22 million to install this system," he said.

Warner recalled the controversy over the ILS and the review of the contracts that were awarded to do the work at Crown Point and Piarco.

"I make no apologies for saying then, and I will say it again, that after six months the same two contractors were given the contracts for the lights in Tobago and in Trinidad."

Warner also promised that the country’s sea and air bridge will be ready to handle an increase in passengers for Easter although one of the ferries will be on dry dock for scheduled maintenance.

He said NIDCO, which is responsible for the water taxi service, has approved a twice-weekly water taxi service to Tobago starting on April 11th.

He added, "We have also decided to monitor the demand for tickets, and I will approach Caribbean Airlines to increase the number of flights to Tobago so as to relieve you of your anxieties."
