Gopeesingh promises greater recognition for teachers

Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh has promised to recognise excellence in teaching through a program to be undertaken in Early Childhood Care and Education, primary and secondary schools in Trinidad and Tobago.

He made the pledge in Port of Spain over the weekend in an address to the Frank Seepersad Memorial "Teacher of the Year Award" 2010 at the Cascadia Hotel. He said his ministry would offer scholarships, bursaries and even financial grants for teachers who win the awards.

“It is time that we recognise our teachers and it is time that we encourage them in their continuous life-long learning activities in their career path development in their pursuit of excellence in education,” Gopeesingh said.

He pledged that the program would start in the new academic year, adding that educators at the ordinary levels can look forward to the ministry moving forward with the process and offering scholarships up to the PhD level.

“The time has come for what the nation’s teachers do to be recognised and assisted by the Government and it was what this government intended to do”, Gopeesingh said.

He added that the ministry has already shared with TTUTA a new strategic initiative to partner with teachers. “Without teachers the education system cannot progress,” Gopeesingh said.

He also spoke about the Secondary Entrance Assessment (SEA), which involves teaching Mathematics, English language and Creative Writing. The minister noted that in preparation for this exam the school system neglects other key subjects.

President of TTUTA Roustan Job spoke about the role of the teacher, which he said "remains the highest calling" noting that "the greatest satisfaction derives from teaching."
