Tertiary Education Minister Fazal Karim told reporters Thursday Cabinet has approved $16 million to expand the Government Assisted Tertiary Education (GATE) program. The move fulfills another promise made by the People's Partnership.
Karim said the expanded GATE will include technical and vocational education studies, beginning April 1. He noted that the 2010-11 budget is about $625 million, with 27,300 approved students. He said this year the program will get a $16 million boost.
The minister said phase one of GATE will be from April to September, targeting 500 instructors to assess and train in the Caribbean Vocational Qualification (CVQ) and 45,000 students seeking certification at level two within the national qualification framework of the Accreditation Council of Trinidad and Tobago.
A cabinet-approved supervisory committee will be oversee the GATE expansion.
