Reshmi Usha Ramnarine has quit as the head of the SSA. She was appointed to the post earlier this week for a six month term.
"The appointment was made to assist in the rationalization, streamlining and amalgamation of the SIA into the SSA. The merger has been ongoing for some time." the ministry of national security stated on Friday.
The appointment became controversial following news that staff at the security agency were unhappy with the appointment of the 31-year-old. They said she was not qualified for the job.
The government responded by saying that Ramnarine was appointed on the recommendation of the National Security Council.
On Saturday, Ramnarine abruptly announced that she is quitting the post with immediate effect stating that she was doing so with deep regret.
Ramnarine's resignation letter to National security Minister John Sandy said she was of the view that "the work of the agency and my duties as director, as well as my personal safety, has been compromised by the high level of exposure over the past few days."
In a media release, Sandy thanked Ramnarine "for her willingness to serve and wished her the very best in her future endeavours."
