In a brief address, she said the event this year holds special significance since Trinidad and Tobago had been spared the worst of Hurricane Tomas, which was supposed to hit the country Friday.
“We have been very blessed, as we all know, Hurricane (Tomas) just bypassed us and we have to give praise and thanks to God," she said. She also offered best wishes to other Caribbean states that have been hit by Tomas.
By Sunday the tail of Tomas wreaked havoc in both islands, leaving a trail of flooding and devastation.
