Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar is in London Tuesday to attend a meeting of Commonwealth Economic Partnership Forum. The two-day conference begins Wednesday.
Minister of Tobago Development Vernella Alleyne-Toppin will act as prime minister in Persad-Bissessar's absence.
Before leaving for London on a BA flight from Tobago Monday, Persad-Bissessar handed out hundreds of laptop computers to form one students at three Tobago secondary schools, including the Scarborough Secondary.
She urged the youngsters to take care of their computers, noting that they are fortunate to have the opportunity to own them.
"You are getting these laptops when the vast majority of pupils your age throughout our globe do not have access to a computer," Persad-Bissessar told the students.
The Prime Minister reminded the children that many people who excelled in society did not have the privilege of such technology.
Minority Leader of the Tobago House of Assembly Ashworth Jack reminded students that they have received the computers because the People's Partnership Government commitment to education and to the children of Trinidad and Tobago.
She made the announcement shortly after calling for a minute’s silence in memory of the late diplomat and Head of the Public Service, Tobago-born Dodderidge Alleyne and the late Permanent Secretary in the Tobago Development Ministry, Paula Hypolite. Both of them died over the weekend.
