A report in the Trinidad Express Wednesday said Junior Sammy Contractors Ltd of Sum Sum Hill in Claxton Bay has been awarded a contract valued at about $162 million to complete renovation works at Crown Point International Airport, Tobago.
The paper said Sammy confirmed that he has started peripheral work around the Tobago airport although the contract has not been "completely finalised" as it had not been "officially signed off".
He said he tendered for the job in April and was awarded the contract "towards the end of August", the Express reported. Sammy said the renovation work at Crown Point is scheduled to be completed in June next year.
The Express said the Airport Authority's acting general manager, Louis Frederick, confirmed the contract was awarded to Junior Sammy. Frederick said the contract involves the paving of roads and the installation of security fencing around the perimeter of the airport, among other things.
"There is a whole lot more work that needed to be done, and it was all-round airfield improvement work," Frederick told the paper.
The Express said Frederick told its reporter that the Airports Authority has the right to award contracts for certain projects. "There are certain things that we have the right over, and it is all done in accordance with the rules and regulations of the AATT," he said.
The Express also asked Fredericks about the contracts for lighting upgrades at the airports.
It quoted him as saying "if the lights are not installed soon, we could have some major failures. In fact, we have had some failures in the past. British Airways had to have a flight delayed because the lights were not functioning."
