The Ministry of Health issued a statement Friday giving the assurance that it has made arrangements to pay more than $36 million ($36,867,845.54) for the completion of works on the new Scarborough General Hospital in Tobago.
"The money was released to facilitate payment to NIPDEC, the contractors for this project," the release noted.
The Ministry said it remains committed to competing the hospital by June 2011.
Construction of the hospital was started during the Panday UNC administration and was estimated to cost of $126 million. Under the Manning PNM administration the cost has reached $692 million, exclusive of VAT.
Earlier this week, Orville London, Chief Secretary of the Tobago House of Assembly (THA) told reporters that the completion of the facility was at risk because more than $36 million was owing to the contractors.
