Devant Maharaj is the new chairman of the Public Transport Service Corporation (PTSC).
Maharaj is the CEO of Radio Jagriti the radio station owned and operated by the Sanatan Dharma Maha Sabha, the largest Hindu organisation in Trinidad and Tobago.
He took the Manning government to court in a discrimination case over the application for a licence to operate the station. The Privy Council ruled in favour of the Maha Sabha and ordered the government to grant the licence.
Maharaj is also a well known community and political activist and a member of the United National Congress (UNC). He ran unsuccessfully as the Congress of the People (COP) candidate in Couva South in the 2007 general election. However he resigned from COP and rejoined the UNC earlier this year.
Works and Transport Minister Jack Warner made the announcement Friday to reporters. He also announced that former BWIA Captain Varman Bajnath will be the new chairman of the Airports Authority of T&T.
Warner also said Kenny Da Silva will be returning to the post of chairman of the National Carnival Commission, with Don Sylvester as his deputy. Nyrere Alfoso will be the new chairman of the Port Authority, he said.
The minister said cabinet approved the appointments on Thursday.
