The Mighty Arrow has been felled.
Alphonsus Celestine Edmund Cassell, better known in the world of calypso as the Mighty Arrow, died Wednesday morning. He was 55.
Arrow had been afflicted with a brain tumour.
His last public performance was at the gala opening of the 5th Summit of the Americas, in April 2009, at the Hyatt Regency.
Arrow became world famous following the release of his hit “Hot Hot Hot” in 1982.
In paying tribute to Arrow, Multicultural Minister Winston Peters said his friend contributed significantly to Caribbean cultural identity and nationhood.
Peters, who is himself a calypsonian, described Arrow as “one of the true trailblazers of the soca art form and he travelled the world promoting the rich indigenous music of the Caribbean."
He added, "Arrow was a debonair and versatile entertainer, known for his dashing stage character, infectious music, exciting lyrics and easy-going, friendly personality.”
