Dookeran announces COP election for Oct. 17

Winston Dookeran announced on Sunday that the Congress of the People (COP) will hold its internal elections on October 17.

COP members will choose nine officers, including party chairman and vice chairman. Dookeran's post of leader is not being contested.

Nominations for the election is between September 27 and October 4.
Only persons who have been COP members since April 17, 2010 are eligible to contest the elections and vote.

The COP has adopted a one-member-one vote system to elect officials. COP's partner in government, the United National Congress (UNC), is the only other party that has such an open electoral system.

The People's National Movement (PNM) will also conduct its internal elections later this year, but Keith Rowley would not be challenged as leader.

Rowley was acclaimed leader following the ousting of Patrick Manning, who was forced to resign after the party's defeat in the May 24 general election.

The PNM uses a delegate system for its internal election.
