3,000 laptops arrive for secondary schools children

Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh takes delivery of 3,000 laptop computers
Three thousand HP laptop computers arrived in Trinidad Friday for form one students. It's the first set from a total order of more than 20,000 computers promised by the new People's Partnership government for every student who entered high school for the first time this month.

The computers cost the government TT$83 million. The government is expected to begin distrubuting the computers next week.

Tertiary Education Minister Fazal Karim spoke about the laptop project earlier in the week when he spoke in the Senate during the budget debate, noting that training of teachers to work with the new technology will begin on Monday.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar told the UN millennium conference about the laptop project earlier in the week, noting that her government's plan is to ensure that every child has a laptop in her/his book bag.
