Government is spending $81 million to upgrade five national stadiums for the FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup scheduled for September 5-25 in Trinidad and Tobago.
Sports Minister Anil Roberts told reporters Monday the previous government was supposed to complete upgrades in 2009 to the Hasely Crawford Stadium, the Ato Boldon Stadium, the Manny Ramjohn Stadium, Larry Gomes Stadium and the Dwight Yorke Stadium in Bacolet Tobago.
He said the Manning administration had approved $108 million for the project to get the facilities ready for the 2009 Caribbean Games, which were cancelled due to the Swine Flu outbreak.
He said no work was done and he has no idea where the $108 million went.
Roberts said the work on the five stadiums will be done in time for the games, which begin in a few weeks. “Major lighting and seating work are needed as well as work on the media centre at the facilities,” Roberts said.
