T&T ministerial team to tackle crime

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar said Wednesday she has given an inter ministerial team two weeks to review the Trinidad and Tobago Government’s approach to national security.

The team will begin its work on Saturday.

Speaking with the media following a meeting of the National Security Council at her office in Persad-Bissessar said the team will review the 2010 National Security Sector Review.

The committee will be headed by National Security Minister John Sandy and include the Attorney General, Minister of Justice, Minister of Legal Affairs, Minister of Energy and Minister of Foreign Affairs. The team met Wednesday.

Persad-Bissessar said the agenda of the task force will be to “prepare an action plan for the containment of criminal activities and reducing the number of murders.” It will include the deployment of police officers, intelligence gathering, the use of video tape technology in courts as well as social issues to combat crime.

During the general election campaign the People's Partnership pledged a frontal attack on crime. It was listed as among its seven fundamental pillars for governance.
