PM Kamla invites NY police chief to speak with T&T police

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Monday invited New York's Commissioner of Police to speak to senior members of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service.

She extended the invitation to
Raymond W Kelly during a meeting with the police chief in New York. National Security advisor Gary Griffith, Housing Minister Dr Roodal Moonilal and Press Secretary Garvin Nicholas accompanied Persad-Bissessar to the meeting.

Nicholas told the Trinidad media, "The meeting with the Police Commissioner went very well. We spoke about crime initiatives that have worked in New York City."

He noted that the total number of murder's in New York last year was 471 with a population of 8.4 million.

"When you have an example of something working and you can safely see where the crime rate in New York City has fallen year after year...certainly you will want to share those accomplishments with your own police," he said.

Nicholas said the meeting discussed several crime-fighting initiatives including gangs, prevention and detection of crimes, as well as emergency response in times of natural disasters.
