Pastor joins crusade to hang convicted killers

As the murders in Trinidad and Tobago continue to increase daily - it has now reached 335 - more voices are joining the chorus in support of hangings.

Chaguanas West MP Jack Warner is leading the campaign to execute convicted killers and has been getting support from citizens as well as religious leaders.

Last week two Hindu priests called on the State to resume hangings.

On Tuesday a pastor, commenting on the murder of police officer Jason Thomas, urged Government to speedily reintroduce the death penalty.

Pastor Rolston Bodka of the Enterprise Village Open Bible Church told reporters he supports capital punishment.

"If you could take a life and the law says to hang, then hang them. I feel if a man, like how this is done, and the law say to hang, as long as you go before your peers, and you sit in a court and the jury finds you guilty to hangman, then you should hang," Bodka said.

He added, "I say if that's the law of the land, then hang them."

The slain officer's mother, Grace Thomas, expressed disappointment. "I'm very disappointed that the Government has to wait until incidents like this happen to decide to bring back hanging."

She added, "These criminals are well armed and they don't care about anybody...I support the death penalty."

Thomas was shot and killed Monday night while trying to escape from three men who tried to hijack his vehicle.
