Finance Minister Winston Dookeran has criticised the National Lotteries Control Board (NLCB) for full-page colour advertisement placed in newspapers congratulating new Port of Spain Mayor Louis Lee Sing.
The ad showed Lee Sing wearing a black balisier tie, which is the People's National Movement's (PNM). Dookeran called the ad "improper".
Lee sing is the Chairman of the board. He and other directors tendered their resignation following the change of government. However the new People's Partnership government has not yet appointed a new board.
The head of the Indo-Trinbago Equality Council (ITEC) Devant Maharaj is demanding an explanation.
"It is obscene and a clear abuse of State funds," he told the Express. Maharaj asked why Lee Sing's company, Citadel Ltd, did not place a similar ad.
"That's because the State company's funds are being used, and it could run into the thousands. Even though the board tendered their resignations, someone is still pulling the strings there," he said.
"An explanation should be given to the public, naming the person or on what basis the ad was placed and why just for one mayor when there were others sworn in as well.
"Why didn't they take out an ad congratulating new San Fernando Mayor Marlene Coudray or any of the others?...It's time we the public stand up and say we will no longer accept party symbols," he said.
