Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Tuesday advised citizens to be on the alert for more flooding in the country.
“Up to last night I saw councillors and mayors. They were out there very concerned because the flooding,” she said.
“We need to be on the guard. We are in August, we have September, October...all the way to December. We are in the wet season and all of T&T must be alert,” the PM added.
A new bulletin was issued in Trinidad at 3:30 Tuesday afternoon warning of the possibility of more flooding in several rain soaked communities.
The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service said continuing rainfall has produced high water levels in a number of rivers and water courses. These include the Caroni River, Cipero River, North Oropouche and South Oropouche Rivers.
It said if the rain continues there is the very strong possibility that the rivers may overflow their banks and cause severe flooding. It said it is most concerned about communities in the Caroni River Basin.
The bulletin also noted that due to heavy prolonged rainfall the ground is saturated and this creates the conditions for street and flash flooding.
In anticipation of such developments, officials are activating and furnishing relief shelters to deal with any emergency.
