Works Minister Jack Warner will act as Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago from SUnday, July 4th until July 12 while Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on her first overseas trip since taking office.

She will be attending the 31st annual CARICOM Heads of Government meeting in Montego Bay, Jamaica from July 4-7 following by a working visit to Kingston on the invitation of Prime Minister Bruce Golding until July 9. following that she will visit Miami to spend time with family.

Press Secretary Garvin Nicholas told reporters Persad-Bissessar would return home on July 12.

The Prime Minister will be accompanied by Press Secretary Gavin Nicholas, Foreign Affairs Minister Suruj Rambachan, Trade Minister Stephen Cadiz, National Security adviser Gary Griffith and technical officials.

Trinidad and Tobago is responsible for energy and national security within CARICOM.

Attorney General Anand Ramlogan endorsed the Prime Minister's decision to appoint Warner, noting that he was the candidate with the most votes in the May 24 general election and holds the post of chairman of the United National Congress (UNC), the principal party in the People's Partnership coalition.

"He was therefore an obvious choice for this acting prime ministership and the Prime Minister in her wisdom chose him...We all congratulate him," Ramlogan told reporters.

Sport and Youth Affairs Minister Anil Roberts congratulated the Prime Minister for "the fortitude, the strength, the understanding and the care for the people to appoint a duly elected Member of Parliament to act as Prime Minister."

Former PM Patrick Manning's preferred choice for an acting PM was Dr Lenny Saith, who was never elected by the people.

Warner was the architect of the Movement for Change that forced the UNC to hold internal elections.

That propelled Persad-Bissessar into the leadership of the party, and eventually into government.
