Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar has told her Jamaican counterpart, Bruce Golding, that Trinidad and Tobago would honour the agreement made by the previous government for Caribbean Airlines (CAL) to take over the operations of Air Jamaica.
She told Golding the brand name Air Jamaica would be maintained.
She made the commitment during a visit to Kingston for talks with Golding. A joint communique following the talks said both leaders agreed on the importance of bilateral trade under the CARICOM Single Market (CSME) and on the need for the trade relations between Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago "to develop on a mutually beneficial basis.
"In this regard, it was agreed to promote reciprocal visits of business delegations to explore opportunities and enhance economic linkages," the statement added.
Her visit included a luncheon with the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce which allowed her "to have a useful exchange of views with private sector representatives from Jamaica and Trinidad and Tobago," the statement added.
Persad-Bissessar and Golding discussed matters such as energy, health, crime and security, free movement of persons, agriculture, and trade and investment, including the agreement for the sale of Air Jamaica to Caribbean Airlines.
"They acknowledged the mutually beneficial ties in several key areas, including trade and investment, education, sports and culture, all of which had served to strengthen the linkages between the people of their states.
"They reaffirmed their strong commitment to further enhancing these relations through regular consultations and joint action in areas of mutual interest," the statement said.
During the visit, Persad-Bissessar met with the Vice-Chancellor of the University of the West Indies (UWI), Professor Nigel Harris and senior university officials.
She pledged US$5 million for the university hospital.
She also visited the St. Andrew High School for Girls, where she had taught during her younger days.
The Kingston visit followed the CARICOM summit in Montego Bay. She was accompanied by a delegation that included Foreign Minister Dr. Surujrattan Rambachan and trade and industry minister Stephen Cadiz.
