Kamla refuses to meet with Bakr on sale of Muslimeen properties

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar on Monday turned down a request made by Jamaat-al-Muslimeen leader Imam Yasin Abu Bakr for a meeting to discuss the State's decision to sell off the assets of the organisation.

The government has placed ads in the Trinidad and Tobago newspapers inviting interested persons to an auction of land and buildings previously owned by Bakr in several locations across Trinidad.

It comes on the heels of an announcement by the prime minister that the government will hold a public inquiry into the 1990 failed coup led by Bakr and a group of his supporters.

The uprising resulted in damage to properties including police headquarters. A court has ordered Bakr to pay compensation worth more than $32 million. And last year a high court judge ordered the state to sell Bakr's properties to get the money.

But the Manning administration did not act on the court order.

"I think such a meeting should be held by lawyers who will represent the Government." Persad-Bissessar said, adding that it is a legal, not a political matter.

Bakr is claiming that the auction is "unlawful and illegal" and shows desperation by the new government.
