Rowley becomes 4th leader of the PNM

Keith Rowley is the unchallenged Political Leader of the People’s National Movement (PNM).

No one is challenging him for the post so the PNM’s June 27 special leadership convention will be a formality to officially declare him leader.

"The PNM therefore has accomplished the transition from one political leader to a new political leader in a very short space of time, without any major issues surrounding that office," PNM Chairman Conrad Enill told the media.

On May 27 the General Council demanded and received Patrick Manning's resignation.

Rolwey is the fourth leader of the party, which was founded in 1956 by a small team of leaders including Dr Eric Williams, Kamlauddin Mohammed, Sir Learie Constantine, Dr Ibbit Mosaheb, Dr Patrick Solomon and Dr Winston Mahabir.

Williams led the party until his death in office 1981. George Chambers succeeded him and five years later the PNM was swept out of office for the first time, retaining only three of the 36 seats in Parliament.

Patrick Manning, who was one of the three, was elected leader in 1987 and stayed in the post until he was forced out of office last month after he led his party to a humiliating defeat in the general election.
