Gopeesingh promises laptops, probe of textbooks scam

Education Minister Dr Tim Gopeesingh said Monday officials of his ministry are preparing a cabinet note on laptops for school children.

That was one of the top promises made during the general election campaign by the People's Partnership.

The minister told reporters the government wants to ensure that it keeps its promise and added that he expects the matter will be discussed this week at the cabinet level.

“We definitely have to provide these laptops to the students before school is reopened and under our 120-day time-frame. I think it expires on September 24, but that doesn’t mean to say we will not provide laptops long before that to the students," he said.

The minister said tendering for the computers is a matter for the cabinet to decide.

Gopeesingh also said Government would clamp down on alleged "collusion and malfeasance" in the $250 million school textbook industry.

He said there has always been collusion between those who write, make and sell school-books, but noted that now there is a “free for all” in the books available to pupils.
The minister said he wants to narrow the choice to just one or two books per subject.

He also said the ministry is paying attention to the problem of continuing school violence and would find solutions.
