Jack Warner promised on Monday night to establish a special Laventille Foundation to encourage and promote the community's sports and cultural talent. He said he will begin the legal process on Tuesday and will launch the foundation in the community Tuesday.
The chairman of the United National Congress (UNC) was speaking at a political meeting in Laventille.
He said the foundation would be dedicated to NJAC leader Makandal Daaga, who is a member of the People’s Partnership. Daaga is the opposition candidate for Laventille West in the May 24 general election.
Warner praised Daaga as a national icon, stating that Daaga has brought ”The Hill and the Caroni plains together.”
He said when he met Sunday with Daaga in Laventille with UNC leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar and COP leader Winston Dookeran, “We were not separated by any river; or by any ruler. It was a moment of great promise.”
Warner spoke about what he called empty promises from the PNM and said “Laventille does not need election promises from Patrick Manning. Laventille does not need paternalism of that sort.”
He said, “Laventille needs the opportunity to shine, as so many of her sons and daughters have shone, and are shining.”
He announced that the foundation he is proposing is a personal pledge.
“With Makandal Daaga as my witness, with all gathered here as my witness, with the hundreds of thousands in the television and radio audiences and in cyberspace as my witness, I make this promise.
“In my personal capacity, I will establish a Laventille Foundation for unleashing, encouraging and promoting the abundant sports and cultural talent, which abounds in Laventille.
“That Foundation will involve Laventilleans as Governors and Trustees and Programme Directors,” he said.
“I pledge to negotiate with my associates around the world in persuading them to be patrons of this Foundation; with the obligation of raising matching funds to match any amount generated by local friends of Laventille, dollar for dollar,” Warner said.
He said he has asked Daaga to nominate seven persons for the “Makandal Daaga Laventille Winners Foundation”, which he will launch with “a significant personal contribution.” He asked that one of the members be Russell Latapy.
Warner said the Manning regime has not done enough to ensure that the young people of Laventille recognise and achieve their full potential.
“With Makandal Daaga as a leader, and with Mother Kamla as Prime Minister leading the People’s Partnership government Laventille will come into its own as peaceful, industrious, developed and model community."
However he said this will only happen if Laventille votes to remove Patrick Manning, from office.

when you take care of those in need the most, all will reap the benefit. looking at the unc/cop/partnership meeting in laventille, I was really moved. the reception that daaga and mcleod got was special, the reception that dookeran, jack and kamla got was overwhelming.the coalition will win this laventille seat.
When people are truly united in a cause that transcends tribalism and political opportunism, nothing on earth can stop them.
