Percy shows opposition how to "DO SO"

Percy Villafana became a national icon of resistance to the PNM when he told Prime Minister Patrick Manning in March this year that the PNM and Manning were not welcome on his property.

There was no talk of a general election at the time, but Manning was preparing for one, with regular walkabouts in communities.

When he went to San Juan, he attempted to enter the property of the 81-year-old Villafana who blocked Manning from entering his yard.

The man said he wanted nothing to do "with Manning and them" and told the Manning entourage his days of supporting the PNM were over.

Villafana became an instant hero for those who opposed Manning and his government especially after Manning got authorities to check up on the man who was exercising his rights to protect his property.

"It turns out, Madam Deputy Speaker, that the 81-year-old gentleman is a resident of Winnipeg, Canada...who returns to Trinidad and Tobago to spend the winter."

The opposition picked up on Villafana's method of resistance - forming his hand in the shape of a cross which he said is a Christian practice to ward off evil.

"DO SO" became a part of the opposition battle cry. And on Sunday, Villafana was on stage in Chaguanas to show supporters how to "DO SO".

Thousands cheered and joined Villafana as he put his hand together to demonstrate the nation can use his example to get rid of the evil plaguing the country. He called on everyone to vote against the People's National Movement.

The People's Partnership said Villanfana was not paid and never requested any reward for his appearance on the stage. However he asked for consideration be given to building a library in his community.

The coalition has promised that it will include it among its campaign pledges.
