There were moments of anxiety at a meeting of the United National Congress (UNC) Thursday night in Chaguanas when an electrical outage caused security personnel to hustle UNC leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar off the stage.
It happened during a performance of a new song proclaiming "Manning is a failure and UNC is the saviour". Midway through the live performance there was a loud explosion and the stage went into darkness as all the lights went off.
About a dozen security officers immediately moved in, formed a cordon around Persad-Bissessar and walked her off the stage to a neighbouring building. Persad-Bissessar's spouse, Dr Greg Bissessar, who was in the audience, rushed to see what had happened.
Within about 10 minutes the lights came back on and she was escorted back to the stage as the large audience applauded.
An official said later that someone accidentally tripped a main switch and that caused the explosion.
Pedrsad-Bissessar used the incident later in her address, saying when there is darkness, light follows and predicted that the light of the People's Partneship will end the darkness caused by the Manning administration.
