Where is Calder Hart?

The legal team of the Congress of the People (COP) called on Attorney General John Jeremie to be more specific in giving information about when Calder Hart will be returning to the country.

Two members of the team have accused Jeremie of deliberately procrastinating in getting Malaysian authorities to authenticate documents supplied to the police and the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) allegedly showing a link between Sherrine Hart and two directors of Sunway (Caribbean) Construction Limited.

Hart, who resigned hiss post as executive chairman of UCeCOTT, left the country on march 6 with his wife and daughter..

Jeremie told reporters Thursday the Commissioner of Police and the investugators have told him there is no need to speak to Calder Hart at this moment. and he insisted that he can find Hart if necessary.

A media report quotes investigators as saying they are in fact trying to locate Hart, contradicting the statement by the the attorney general. Attempts to search Hart's house in trinidad have been futile since there was no one at home on whom police could serve search warrants.

Jeremie also said Interpol is helping Trinidad and Tobago authorities authenticate documnets supplied by COP, citing, among other things a cumbersome Malaysian bureaucracy and the time difference.

"The remarks of the AG I find to be utterly outrageous. All this time has passed...almost three weeks and still there is no indication that the COP documents have been authenticated,” COP's attorney Vernon De Lima said Thursday.

Another COP attorney, Timothy Hamel-Smith, shared De Lima’s views. “I would think that with the benefit of the copies of the birth and marriage certificates presented by the Congress it will be a simple matter for the AG and or police, through Interpol, to obtain their own certified copies of the documents.

“My information is that once you have all the data you can obtain these documents within two days of an application to the registry in Malaysia. The only reason why the COP took six weeks to get the documents is because we had to search for the information and in particular National Identification number of each individual...

“If the attorney general wants the public to believe that the police have not yet sought to contact Calder Hart then you would expect that he would indicate how much longer or how many other persons the police need to obtain information from before contacting Calder Hart,” Hamel-Smith said.
