U.S. embassy wants explanation about Campbell's 'deportation'

The American Embassy in Port of Spain has expressed concern over the reason given by the Trinidad and Tobago government for denying entry to a U.S. citizen.

Political strategist and communication adviser Bernie Campbell was told on Thursday night that he would not allowed to enter the country.

The national security ministry denied that Campbell was deported but said that he was not allowed to enter the country on specific grounds relating to the section of the immigration act that denies entry to "Any person who from information or advice which in the opinion of the Minister is reliable information or advice is likely to be an undesirable inhabitant or, or visitor to Trinidad and Tobago.”

Campbell works for the firm AKPD, which handled the Obama campaign in the United States. He had been contracted by the opposition to work on the May 24 general election campaign.

"We are concerned about the grounds on which he was detained and turned around," Matthew Cassetta, Public Affairs Officer at American Embassy, told the Trinidad Guardian.

"We asked the T&T Government for an explanation...We want to ensure that everything was procedurally done," he explained.

Casetta told the paper Campbell is a private American citizen who was in T&T on his own personal business.

He noted that the section of the immigration law used to deny Campbell entry is seldom used, which is why he is seeking an explanation.

I believe that the comments made to the media on the Sunday at Rienzi Complex may provide a clue.
