UNC drops key members of the old guard; no Panday in lineup

The United National Congresss (UNC) on Friday announced its list of candidates for the May 24 general election, leaving out most of the old guard and opting for fresh faces. It came on the day the party turned 21.

UNC Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar said she doesn't expect any backlash from the party's decision. UNC Chairman Jack Warner said as far he knows there is no dissent.

Among those who have been left out are Ramesh L, Maharaj, Kelvin Ramnath, Mickela Panday, and Dr Hamza Rafeeq.

Former UNC leader Basdeo Panday did not offer himself for selection; the former prime minister plans to run as an independent in Chaguanas West against Jack Warner.


Commenting on the nominations, Panday's brother, Subhas who will not be running again in Princes Town, said he is disappointed. However he said the leader knows best and he called on all members to rally with the party and work to help defeat the People's National Movement (PNM).

  8. Verna St Rose - St Ann's
  9. Ramona Ramdial - Couva North
  10. Rudranath Indarsingh - Couva South
  11. Colin Partap - Cumuto/Manzanilla
  12. Garvin Nicholas - Diego Martin North
  13. Chandresh Sharma - Fyzabad
  14. Clifton DeCouteau - Moruga/Tableland
  15. Jairam Seemungal - La Horquetta/Talparo
  16. Winston Peters - Mayaro
  17. Nizam Baksh - Naparima
  18. Dr Roodal Moonilal - Oropouche East
  19. Stacy Roopnarine - Oropouche West
  20. Herbert Volney - St Joseph
  21. Dr Fuad Khan -Barataria/St Juan
  22. Errol McLeod - Pointe a Pierre (MSJ)
  23. Nela Khan - Princes Town
  24. Annabella Davis - Port of Spain North/St Anns West
The party is holding a rally at Mid Centre Mall, Chaguanas on Sunday with its partners at which the People's Partnership will present the 41 candidates for the election.

The People's National Movement (PNM) is still finalizing its list and will present the team at Woodford Square on Sunday.
