There will be no legal rally in Port of Spain on Friday to coincide with the no confidence debate against Prime Minister Patrick Manning on Friday.
The People's National Movement (PNM) had been planning to bring 20,000 supporters to Woddford Square to show support for Manning, but acting police commissioner James Philbert has turned down the PNM's application for the rally.
He also turned down a similar request from David Abdulah, leader of the Federation of Independent Trade Unions and NGOs (FITUN), to lead a march in Port of Spain Friday. FITUN is planning activities planned in order to keep within the law.
PNM Chairman Conrad Enill expressed disappointment but said the party will abide by the decision. "It was declined on the basis that the commissioner, with the kind of numbers that we were looking at, was not able to provide resources to guarantee law and order."
PNM public relations officer Jerry Narace said Philbert was concerned about "the influx of increased vehicular and pedestrian traffic as a consequence of the significant attendance at the proposed event".
On September 12, 2008, the party hosted a mass rally in Woodford Square without police permission. Manning addressed supporters during a break from a Parliamentary no confidence motion.
