A memo from the General Secretary of the People's National Movement (PNM) suggests that the party is serious about an early general election.
In the memo to constituencies dated March 29, 2010 and seen by JYOTI, Martin Jopseph has set 5.30 p.m. on April 6 as the deadline for constituencies to submit nominees for the election.
Prime Minister Patrick Manning announced over the weekend that screening begins the next day in San Fernando East, which is the constituency he has held since 1971 when he was elected unopposed due to the no-vote campaign.
The memo from Joseph states that in order to meet the deadline certain procedures normal to the nomination process have been waived.
"...it would be necessary to (a) alter the stipulation for written invitation...and (b) to waive the timeframe (of 7 days) ...which are normally associated with the conduct of this exercise" Joseph stated.
"Party groups and constituency youth leagues are asked to treat this exercise as a serious and urgent matter and have their nominations submitted to the constituency secretary and the General Secretary by Tuesday April 6, 2010", he instructed.
A report in the Trinidad Express Thursday said the paper contacted several PNM MPs who said they are ready to submit their names for re-election.
They include cabinet ministers: Kennedy Swaratsingh, Karen Nunez-Tesheira, Junior Regrello, Nileung Hypolite and Deputy Speaker Pennelope Beckles.
MPs Dr Keith Rowley and Anthony Roberts previously stated that they will sek the nomination in their respective constituencies. Rowley has said he would be guided by the decision of the constituency.
