Parallel UNC group planned?

Couva South MP Kelvin Ramnath is planning a meeting Thursday billed as a gathering of the Caucus for the Preseveration of Democracy in the UNC.

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 5:00 pm at Ramnath's Couva South Constituency conference room.

An invitation to the meeting states that former UNC leader Basdeo Panday, Tabaquite MP Ramesh L Maharaj, Oropouche West MP Mickela Panday and "other MPs and activists" will attend.

The group has refused to accept the leadership of Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who won a landslide victory against Panday in January. They have also refused to attend meetings of the UNC parliamentary caucus.

When Panday and some of his MPs left the NAR government they formed a group called CLUB 88, the Caucus for Love, Unity and Brotherhood. That group was led by Ramnath and went on to form the United National Congress (UNC).

No one is saying if the present group is planning on forming a new party. Panday said recently the people themsevles might form a new party if the current UNC leadership fails them.
