A news report on TV6 Tuesday said Basdeo Panday is thinking about running as an independent in Chaguanas West in the 2010 general election.
That's the seat that Jack Warner held in the 9th Parliament, which was dissolved on April 8, 2010.
Panday was the MP for Couva North but he has refused to file nomination papers for the seat to run for the United National Congress (UNC) in the 2010 election.
Panday told the media he did not wish to submit his name because Warner, who is currently chairman of the UNC, would be one of the people who would have to determine if he gets approved to run in the constituency he has represented since 1976.
The former UNC leader and Warner were joint leaders of the UNC Alliance in the 2007 general election but fell out shortly after the vote, which led to Warner forming the Movement for Change to force internal elections.
That angered Panday who remains hostile to Warner, who was elected chairman of the UNC in the January 24 internal election that saw Panday lose the leadership of the UNC to Kamla Persad-Bissessar.
Panday has refused to recognize Warner as the UNC chairman. He also claims Warner has refused to account for millions of dollars received on behalf of the UNC in the 2007 election, a charge that Warner has repeatedly dismissed.
Warner won the highest number of votes in Chaguanas West among opposition candidates in a three-way contest.

This is clearly a new dynamic.Mr Panday has said that the purpose of a charismatic leader is to commit suicide; that people have publicly said that they will not vote for Mr Warner makes this quite interesting. Mr Panday taught us all how to Vote Against rather than Vote For.
