Kamla says there is always a role for Panday

Kamla Persad-Bissessar told reporters Tuesday there is always a role in the United National Congress (UNC) for party founder and former leader Basdeo Panday.

But she said she cannot force Panday to get involved.

“There is a role for Mr Panday but that can only be with his consent. We cannot force people to do what they don’t want to do,” Persad-Bissessar said.

Panday has refused to seek nomination for the seat he has held since 1976, saying that he feels it is wrong for UNC Chairman Jack Warner to be on the screening committee to decide on the nomination.

The UNc leader said Panday's decision not to seek nomination is his choice. “Mr Panday is entitled to his actions and decisions as any other UNC member...and I respect his decision,” Persad-Bissessar Newsday.

“I have tried to speak with him but he would not speak with me,” Persad-Bissessar explained.

Warner stated that "it is also sad Panday has allowed hatred to consume him in his old age.”
He added, “I wish him well and I wish him the best of health...but I think he allowed hatred to consume him the way it has and it will affect him more than me or anybody else in the party,” Warner added.

Panday's decision to stay out of the UNC lineup is not the end for him. He told the media Tuesday he would consider running as an independent against Warner in Chaguanas West.
